This looks like a pretty revolutionary application from Google called Google Voice. I signed up but have yet to receive my invite though. :-( Check out the link to the site and see all of the cool features it has. Imagine having one phone number that you can direct to your other phone #’s based on the caller and many other features. Cool! I wonder if Apple will ever approve this for the App Store…

Windows 7 is set to officially release on October 22, 2009. SCC has available through our MSDN Academic Alliance site Windows 7 Professional FREE for students. If you do not have a login, have your SCC professor e-mail me and I can get it setup. I downloaded Windows 7 Professional and have tested it on both a desktop and my laptop. I have to say I am very impressed with it. It runs really fast and seems very solid. Microsoft flopped with Vista, so we have been waiting on a good release of Windows since XP was released way back when. Maximum PC gave Windows 7 a great review in the current issue of the magazine (they said Vista was a real stinker). The current issue will be available via PDF on their web site soon. Other faculty have reported significant increases in battery life on Windows 7, which is reported to be an improved feature. Sweet! Another option for students is the Win741 Project where you can get the Windows 7 Home Premium edition for $29.99. I have been hating on Windows for a while now, and I hope this is a significant turnaround for the OS.

There is a really cool web site at alternativeto.net that lists free alternatives to Windows, Mac, Linux, and online applications. Check it out and see if there is a free alternative to some application you do not have to buy.

Apple makes a significant OS deployment with Snow Leopard. Apple’s current Leopard 10.5.x will be the last legacy version to support non-Intel processors. The new true 64-bit Snow Leopard will support on Intel-based Macs and shave a whopping 6GB from the OS install. This space savings is due to the code no longer needed for the non-Intel processor Macs. Apple shows how it is really a hardware company that sells software by offering the upgrade for $29 and a 5-install Family Pack for only $49. Yes, I have already ordered my copy for all the Macs at home.
You can read more about it at Apple’s Snow Leopard page. The only complaint I have read is that they broke the trend of really cool “X”-designed boxes and used a picture of an actual snow leopard. I guess it is hard to please everyone.

Over the summer some cycling friends and I bicycled the Blue Ridge Parkway from Mile Marker 0 in Waynesboro, VA to Mile Marker 469 in Cherokee, NC. We did it in 5 days of riding. Below are links to the summary for each day. Enjoy!

It is a beautiful time in Tarheel country. UNC rolled to an impressive NCAA basketball tournament victory. What this time lapse video of the craziness on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill after the game was over.
