Happy April Fools Day 2012

Sunday, April 1st, 2012

Its that day again already! I’ve already gotten pranked by Google’s awesome Multi Tasking app… which obviously doesn’t exist. But it was still really cool to watch their whole presentation as always.

NameCheap.com did a really cool thing to their site as well. I believe it was a javascript layer or something of that nature. Anyway, their site went from that classy well loved design (if you’ve ever been there you know you love it :) ) to a really really ugly old looking interface! It was a cool prank, and then the website spun around, just like getting “Do a Barrel Roll” on Google. Then, for the people that said “We love the new site” the site outputted a coupon code for a cheaper domain name registration.

I’ve always loved NameCheap. They are far classier, easier, friendlier, stable, faster, and overall a much better company than Godaddy. They also didn’t support SOPA which is another big plus.

You should definitely comment on any April Fools day pranks that got you! I was able to get a family member with that Google trick. I made them watch over my shoulder and I acted like I thought it was real.

I’m also going to try and get someone with something original. Its just really hard to think of something to do. Most things just end up being mean.

Spring Break 2012!

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

Next week is SPRING BREAK and you will not have any work to do for this class. Yes you finally get a break!!! If you noticed that the due date for this week’s work is March 4th and wondered why, then that is the reason.
There was no reason to make it due today since I could not fit another lesson into 2 days. Instead I thought it would be better to give you all a couple of extra days. I have gone ahead and opened the next week so that you know what next week is. Spring Break runs from March 5 – March 11. Classes, including this one, resume on Monday, March 12. Your next assignment, Week 10, actually will become available on March 10 in case you are bored :-) Hopefully though you will take this time to relax, have fun, or whatever you want to do. Enjoy it!!!

On a side note, our student letter is brought to you by our new favorite Social service, ReLoader.me where you can get social media services for Facebook, Twitter and more!:

Dear student,

The SCC Financial Aid office wants to make students aware of the upcoming deadline for a new scholarship/loan program offered through the College Foundation of North Carolina. A scholarship/loan means that although it is technically a loan, if you follow the rules and obligations of the program, the amount is forgiven through service and thus becomes a scholarship.

The Forgivable Education Loans for Service (FELS) consists of the repackaging of several former NC scholarship/loan programs into one program. FELS provides financial assistance to qualified students who are committed to working in North Carolina in fields designated as critical employment shortage areas. These programs are related to teaching, allied health, nursing and medicine programs. This replaces and consolidates some former programs such as the Nursing Scholars scholarship loan Program (NSP), Nurse Education Scholarship Loan Program (NESLP), Prospective Teachers Scholarship Loan (PTSL), and Health, Science & Math (HSM).

The application deadline is April 1, 2012.

To apply go to http://www.cfnc.org/FELS.

Happy Valentines Day!

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Happy Valentines day everyone! What is today even really about? Well, I was going to write a nice post about it, and then I stumbled upon Google’s Doodle of the day. If anything can explain Valentines day, that did. Probably the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen.

Yeah, visit google.com and then click the homepage logo and watch the little video they’ve embedded into their site. Normally they have a great little ‘doodle’ (that’s what they call it) for every holiday, but they really outdid themselves this time. Not necessarily in coding skills or interactivity, but they really nailed the feeling and concept.

SOPA – Put on the Shelf

Monday, January 16th, 2012

SOPA was just ditched! It is no longer up for appeal as President Obama finally smite it down. There is really no telling if President Obama did this because he wanted to get more support for re-election, as its right around the corner, or if he simply changed his mind. We do  know that he originally supported the bill.

However, with such opposition to it, every person who publicly supports it, is going to get bashed by almost everyone. He is much more electable in 2012 if he supports the bill.

However, we haven’t won yet, PIPA is still in the Senate floor, and if it passes, it will be almost as bad… worse for some people. Its almost like they were throwing a curve ball at us with SOPA. You know… give us something so outlandish, SOPA, and then let it get veto’d and put it up on the shelf. Then, while everyone is rejoicing about it getting halted, try to get PIPA passed. PIPA seems like more of a compromise as well.

Is this really their strategy? We will find out in coming weeks.

SNL Banned Video – Media Conspiracy

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Its not every day that Saturday Night Live (snl) bans something. But when it does, you better believe they’ve pushed it too far. However, you would never believe what SNL was forced to ban back in 1998. Its a video highlighting the media in a really, really poor light. The clip was aired on the original show, and then cut out from every single other re-run and post production copy issued. It highlights GE and other companies major influence on the media. GE, who is dumping nuclear waste into playgrounds is caught in a very bad light. The video shows total control of the media by several corporations including Disney. To top it off, these problems are still very real. Disney is still in bed with companies that make war machines, planes, and nukes. And all the cover ups of politicians right now, they all come from the media. Is it any wonder why Ron Paul doesn’t stand a chance? None of these companies want Ron Paul to win because it would be terrible for them.

Maybe the most shocking accusation in the video is that GE killed JFK. The bullets they made were the ones that shot him….

The Dark Knight Rises Leaked Trailer

Monday, December 19th, 2011

The Dark Knight Rises – Possibly the most anticipated movie of 2012. No matter what, definitely going to be a HUGE box office hit. No doubt about it.

People are already going crazy over the teasers and little scraps of information that are being leaked out. But there’s no reason for me to tell you that… you’re probably one of them :P

If you thought the special effects of the previous two Batman movies was great, this new one looks like it will be able to give its predecessors more than a run for their money. But its not just the graphics and special effects of the new Batman movie that is going to make it a hit, its the new characters and story line as well. Christian Bale is obviously still Batman, but there is going to be the addition of two new characters, Catwoman and Bane.

There is a Leaked Trailer out which shows all the main characters. The Trailer went viral instantly, and has been all over Twitter and social networks. Every Batman fan has been extremely satisfied with it, because it is alluring and visually stimulating. Its been called Haunting and alluring as well. You get to see Batman vs. Bane, Commissioner Gordon, Selina Kyle, Bruce Wayne, and the huge stunt that took place at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh this past summer.

Along with the Leaked Dark Knight Rises Trailer there is a Six Minute prologue that was shown to only a few fans. This, of course, has been bootlegged and is now available for watching. The Leaked Trailer and the Six Minute Footage go hand in hand in an effort to virally promote the Dark Night. However, the videos have both been removed from popular sites like YouTube and Vimeo.

The New Film has pretty much double the IMAX footage that The Dark Knight (2008) had. Christopher Noland announced this at a Press Screening. Christopher Noland is a legendary director, and it is only because of him that the past Batman movies have been so enthralling. He is known for his hidden twists, clever endings, mindboggeling graphics, and intelligent films.

I must say that after watching the New Trailer and the 6 Minute Hidden Footage, I am sincerely impressed. I can’t wait for the Summer of 2012!

Winter Weather in the Mountains

Monday, December 5th, 2011

Well, the weather just keeps getting worse as we get into the winter, but it always does that. No surprise for us at Southwestern CC. The weather policy is always helpful to reference when it starts storming etc. Check out the policy here http://www.southwesterncc.edu/policies/5.12.1.htm As of yet, the worst thing to happen this winter was for the power to go out. However, in light of that there hasn’t been as much snow as in past years. That is of course only considering previous years to date (not full winter). We will surely get some blizzards as usual, you can always count on that in Western North Carolina, The Smoky Mountains especially.

Most of us are hoping for some snow days before Christmas Break! However, there is still the first three months of the year which are always cold and snowy. However, be sure to take care on the icy roads which are hazardous.

Southwestern Christmas Concert

Monday, December 5th, 2011

On the first of December I watched the Southwestern Community College choral perform a beautiful Christmas concert. It was in that big Myers Auditorium and was quite a site. I stayed for the whole time which was quite a while. I personally thought the crowd was quite impressive especially for the location (on campus) which is a small Western North Carolina town. Its definitely worth attending next year if you missed it. Hopefully they will perform again! There weren’t very many performers, but that’s to be expected with a small college. Its worth considering to join it and be a part of this great opportunity.

Welcome to North Carolina!
