The Protestant Revolution occurred during the 16th and 17th century and was primarily a religious struggle. This revolution began as an attempt to reform the practices of the Catholic Church, especially those which involved the teaching and sale of indulgences. Indulgence was the remission of punishment due for sins which had already been confessed and absolution given. One of the major causes of this reform was corruption within the church, as well as local governments. Citizens were becoming educated and therefore the percent of those literate began to increase. With this, society began to further understand the corruption that was occurring within the church. Citizens were beginning to demand respect from religious officials, where there was prior a lack of. There were several priests who opposed many “false” doctrines within the church, and viewed this as evidence of corruption of the Church’s Roman hierarchy. Martin Luther was a prime contributor for the revolution. He composed a list of issues with the Catholic Church and titled it 95 Theses. After he complete this list, he nailed it to the door of the castle church in Wittneburg. At this point, his blasphemy was made public, which angered officials. In Germany, 1520, Luther publically expressed his personal doubts of the pope’s honesty. His removal from the Catholic Church on January 3rd, 1521, was a major cause for the Protestant Revolution. Like many previous reformations, the main contributor to the Protestant Revolution was corruption among those in authority. Eventually citizens grow weary of the lack of respect and begin to publicly display their thoughts and take action.

The Scientific Revolution is known as the era in time during the 16th and 17th century in which new ideas of science and math questioned the legitimacy of religion. Scientists were providing ideas and proofs of those ideas that were too obvious and evident to ignore. But the views and beliefs of the Church were so solidly grounded that when doubted, people of the Church and men of God would treat it as blasphemy, punishable to full extent. Scientists were punished for these acts against the church and trying to replace the truths of the Bible with the accusations of man and what they think to be knowledgeable decisions. People of this time were both enraged and intrigued with the words of these scientists and philosophers, not only because of the reasoning but because of the interest of human nature. The Marxist historian and scientist J. D. Bernal said that “the renaissance enabled a scientific revolution which let scholars look at the world in a different light. Religion, superstition, and fear were replaced by reason and knowledge”. Because people are so different in everyway, the arguments and opinions from each group of people caused major controversy. People fought over this issue when it was first brought upon them and arguments of this kind are still brought up today. To either believe that we were created by chance and coincidence or to believe that we were created by a higher being; a God. Through everything, the Scientific Revolution brought new meaning and new ideas to why we, as humans are the way we are.

Since we wrote our discussions on different topics I obviously learned new things from yours. I thought that you did a very good job and I thought that your post was very interesting. You did a good job writing this post. I thought that part about treating some scientific ideas as blasphemy was very interesting.

Nice post Sterling, i agree with you that the struggle between science and religion continues even today. I hear the controversy of evolution quite regular. Science is all about the proof, and religion about faith. The two will always have controversy between them when looking at certain issues.

I think it will always be a hidden thought in the back of everyones head as to how people were created. How to some people go against their beliefs of being created by God if that’s what they strongly feel, but how can people ignore hard facts and proof that it is possible that people were not created by God, that evolution is real and continues to grow. I find it hard to ignore facts but I also know how important it is to have beliefs and to stick to them.

I learned a lot from your post. The Scientific Revolution was a learning time, they accomplished so many things. I think that it is amazing how at that time they were so devoted to the church and religion but they started thinking that humans were created by scientific things instead of God.

Great post! I particularly liked the last part, relating the era of the Scientific Revolution to today. Because, the scientific revolution helped shape the way the world is today. Without it happened, we would not have all the modern technologies and knowledge we have today. Such as the modern conveniences of a washing machine or television.

What was the “Divine Right” of kings? Which monarch best exemplified this?

The Divine Right of Kings is a theory claimed that kings were answerable only to God and it was therefore sinful for their subjects to resist them. This was in the middle ages that evolved in Europe. The Divine Right of Kings stated that kings essentially derived their power from God. Those that believed this would quote bible verses such as Proverbs: 15-16 which states “By me kings reign, and prince’s decree justice. By me princes rule and nobles even all the judges of the earth. Another Bible verse commonly quoted bible verse that claimed support of the divine right of kings was Romans 13: 1 “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisted the power resisted the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. Both of the quotes are from New American Bible, New International Version. Also it is stated in The Divine Right of Kings that “Kings should not believe that they are its master and may use it as they wish. They should exercise it with fear and restraint as a thing which has come to them from God.

I find that of all the absolute rulers in Europe, by far the best example of one and the most powerful, was Louis XIV of France. He indeed believe in absolute Monarchy which was the political doctrine and practice of unlimited centralized authority and absolute sovereignty as vested especially in a monarch or dictator. He believed in the “divine right” of a French monarch that is the appointed of god to govern the country as he wished. Although Louis had some failures, he also had many successes. He controlled France’s money and had many different ways to get, as well as keep his power, and he knew how to delegate jobs to smart but loyal people. Louis XIV achieved royal absolutism and helped France become the most powerful nation in the world. His ideas and actions made him a model of absolutism. He created a strong army, gave the nobles special privileges and revoked the Edict of Nantes which insured his policies would be followed and to eliminate turmoil. He took away religious freedom from the Huguenots which is the French Protestants. This encouraged absolutism because it insured religious unity and eliminated the Protestant threat. The actions and ideas of Louis XIV both reflected and encouraged absolutism. These helped him to gain power, symbolize his importance to society and to insure his policies. He ruled for seventy two years and wrote a book for his heirs on how to be an absolute monarchy.

How would you explain the struggle between science and religion during the scientific revolution?

The scientific revolution was a time of great scientific advancement during the 16th and 17th centuries. The scientific revolution was, however, greatly oppressed by the church. Scientific advancements such as heliocentricity and atomism were made and formerly believed doctrines such as geocentricity and other Aristotelian ideas were disproved. Many of the Aristotelian views were strongly supported by the Catholic church and the scientists who dared to oppose those beliefs were instant targets of the pope and his followers. Punishments were often severe, including house arrest, and this greatly discouraged scientific advancement–though some of the greatest minds refused to give in.

Many scientists were persecuted, the most notable of these was Galileo. Upon inventing one of the first telescopes, he was able to see many areas of space never visible before such as Jupiter and Earth’s moons. The most notable of these observations was Venus’ celestial pattern, which could only be explained by its revolution around the sun. This was a risky point of view if publicized. The Aristotelian belief the Earth was the center of everything, tied well into the church’s misunderstanding of several bible verses which caused them to strictly promote the idea of an Earth-centered universe. Galileo’s views contradicted that of the Catholic church and he was immediately put on trial after a letter he wrote to a duchess of Tuscany was discovered.

Galileo represented himself well in court and he was able to get out with little punishment for his first trial, though at his second trial for publishing his book he was sentenced to house arrest where he remained for the rest of his life. Of particular importance, the church wasn’t defending a Biblical world view in the first place. The Bible never explicitly states that everything revolves around earth. Ironically, the idea was actually from pagan Greek philosophy.

Much of the Catholic churches scientific doctrine came from pagan Greek philosophy. Examples of these were Aristotelian physics: the idea that there were only 4 elements, fire, earth, air, and water. He also believed that all light bodies rise up, and all heavy bodies fall down. These ideas were disproven during the scientific revolution. This led to less credibility of the Catholic church, which was already weakened by the Protestant reformation.

Galileo famously quoted Cardinal Baronius, saying “The Bible was written to show us how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go.” The scientific revolution was a time when the human race advanced greatly in our knowledge of the universe, though the Catholic church did their best to oppress it. Though going against all the obvious evidence reduced the credibility of the church, leading to the eventual subordination of the church to science which still continues today.

Many end users find operating systems are using processor, memory, and storage resources at such increasing rates that a person who wants to install a new version is usually faced with replacing his or her computer or paying for required hardware upgrades. For example, many computers that were successfully using Windows XP could not support the hardware demands of Windows 7. Some people have speculated that the software companies plan for this obsolescence in order to maintain sales at levels which support profits for shareholders. Others say that software companies have to keep upgrading their OS to keep up with developments made by hardware companies. Which do you believe is true—software has to develop to keep up with hardware, or vice versa? Provide a rationale for your position. Could software companies maintain profits by charging an annual user fee rather than planning for new versions to be sold every few years to drive new sales? Why or why not?

I believe that it is not necessary to continually upgrade software. Every time I get used to an OS it changes and I have to learn it all over again. I also do not appreciate the inability to upgrade using the same computer in some cases. I think that people would like an annual users fee more than the time consuming and very expensive task of upgrades. I am not sure if that would yield the same profits, but it would make things easier for the users. I think that upgrades are a good thing for the people who want to use them and that the companies should continue to expand the software, but also allow people who do not want or need to upgrade to continue to use the old OS without it being so difficult. Once the OS changes it becomes really difficult to share documents between computers. For instance, the computer in my office uses Windows XP and my company will not pay to upgrade it. It also uses an older version of Word and other programs. Because of this I have e-mails that will not deliver, attachments that no one can open, and I cannot use my computer to do SNAP exams. It can be really frustrating.

Info on plagiarism for online content copying:

Please remember that plagiarism is defined as using someone else’s work and passing it off as your own, without putting the copied material in quotes (“”). The essay should be written in your own words! You may use an occasional quote to highlight a point or two that you are trying to make, but be sure to use quotes sparingly and only within the context of the argument you are making.
Please note that it is also not acceptable to “recycle” old essays that you may have written in other courses and pass them off as new research for this class. In short, your essay should be an original work, written entirely by you, for this class.
Papers with plagiarized material will result in a zero on the assignment and an “F” for the course!

I do my best to stay away from Social networks and the ‘Social Web’ if that’s what you cal it. Facebook’s privacy is unacceptable in my opinion. They keep records of everything you’ve ever done, including messages. By law, they are forced to give you every bit if information about you that they’ve stored. As I don’t use Facebook, I haven’t done a ton of research about requesting the information they have about you. I’m pretty sure in European countries there’s a form you can submit that forces them to disclose everything they have about you. I think you can do this in the US to through an email or something. I’m sure if I google’d it enough I could find something about it.
Most websites have Privacy pages that outline what info they store and what they do with it. Some websites can actually sell your information to marketing companies. Most people don’t want this, even though they are usually more happy with the ads and products they are contacted about (because the companies can do a better job of targeting the consumer)
A social footprint is just like a ‘carbon footprint’ or any other footprint. Its something you leave behind. Anything that is publicly displayed on your Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIN, etc that can be traced back to you is a footprint.
Another example of a footprint would be googling your name. Names most often show up with Social Networking accounts. You can actually do something called Reputation Management (more popular with companies and organizations that for personal use) which stacks up a bunch of positive sites and profiles and buries bad news posts or info the person/business doesn’t want people searching their names to see.
Lots of colleges monitor Facebook profiles and other Social Networking accounts when they are comparing scholarship applicants. Lots of kids and adults forget that everyone can see what they do online unless they are protective.

Other online websites that are relative… Mostly just testing here to see a boost in these because there’s one site that I don’t like. Somehow its ranking well. Anyway, make sure to visit Nathan Lile and Nathan Lile Swimming.
