It is a great day to be a member of the Rotary Club of Sylva every day, but especially this Thursday. We have had the honor and privilege to award money to 24 wonderful groups who help make our community such a great place to live. Total amount awarded this year is $18,600. Yesterday, we awarded $14,100 and the additional support has been throughout the year thanks to the tremendous fund raising efforts of our members. Groups awarded money for community projects were: Panama Building Project, Stop Hunger Now, Circles of Hope, Community Table, Mountain Projects, Children’s Hope Alliance, Habitat for Humanity, Scouts Venture Crew, Friends of Scouting, United Christian Ministries, Disability Partners, WCU Center for Service Learning, Awake, Reach Southwestern Child Development Commission, SCC Student Success Campaign, Blue Ridge Free Dental Clinic, Webster Enterprises, Clean Slate, Shop with a Cop, Senior Christmas Box Project, Jackson County Christmas Connection, and Peru Water Sanitation Project.

The Sylva Rotary Club speaker this week was Cori Debnam, the daughter of club member Gail Debnam, who presented a program on Diabetic Therapy Dogs. Thank you to Cori for the informative presentation all the wonderful services these dogs can provide. Pictured with them is therapy dog Rose. Scott Baker was recognized by President Eddie as the Rotarian of the Month for the month of January! He received the Above & Beyond pin for his service.
