October 11th, 2012 by Scott Baker

Nathan Dollar, Executive Director of Vecinos Farmworker Health Program, was the featured speaker at a recent lunchtime meeting of the Sylva Rotary Club.  Vecinos, which means “neighbors” in Spanish, provides primary and preventative health care services to migrant farm workers in Jackson, Macon, Swain and Transylvania Counties.  Dollar shared that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, ranks agriculture as one of the three most dangerous occupational environments. North Carolina ranks 6th in the nation in the total number of farm workers it employs.  In Jackson County, farmworkers are hired to plant and harvest tomatoes, strawberries and Christmas trees.  Pictured from left are Dollar, Sylva Rotary Club President Lyn Lazar, and Vecinos Outreach Worker, Amy Schmidt.
