2012-02-23: Paige Roberson – Downtown Sylva Association

February 23rd, 2012 by Scott Baker

Downtown Sylva Association Executive Director, Paige Roberson, was the featured speaker at a recent meeting of the Sylva Rotary Club.  Roberson said the DSA’s mission is to advocate the economic and philosophical importance of preserving and protecting historic downtown Sylva as “The Heart of Jackson County”.  When citizens shop at locally-owned businesses, Roberson said, approximately 70% of their expenditures remain to strengthen the local economy, whereas only about 30% of purchases in chain stores do this.  Roberson also spoke about the upcoming 15th annual Greening Up the Mountains festival, which will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012, on Main and Mill Streets in downtown Sylva.  Pictured with Roberson (right) is Sylva Rotary Club President, Ruddy Kaye.

The Sylva Rotary Club recently recognized Lindsay Bowers as their Student of the Month.  A senior at Smoky Mountain High School, Bowers is Vice President of the Student Council and President of the SMHS chapter of the National Honor Society.  She also participates in varsity volleyball and basketball, Show Choir,  the Interact Club and numerous volunteer roles in the community.  Pictured with Bowers is Sylva Rotary Club member, Rick Collings.
