2014-09-18: Jennifer Bauer – Landslide Education

September 18th, 2014 by Scott Baker

The Rotary Club of Sylva had a detailed presentation delivered by Jennifer Bauer with Appalachian Landslide Consultants regarding landslides in Western North Carolina. Jennifer has a passion for identifying landslide hazards in Western North Carolina to help protect life and property in our beautiful mountains. The presentation detailed how vulnerable our counties are to landslides and the history of devastating slides such as the Peeks Creek disaster from September 16, 2004 which destroyed fifteen homes and killed five people near the top of Fishhawk Mountain in Macon County. There are more landslides in our area than most people expect, and Jennifer shared several helpful tips on what to look for and how to get help once you find the warning signs. Early detection and hiring properly licensed and trained professionals to perform work is crucial. This is a great example of an intriguing topic discussed at the weekly Rotary Club of Sylva lunch meetings.
