2014-04-17: Philippines Project – Bill Biddle

Bill Biddle’s was the featured speaker at a recent lunchtime meeting of the Sylva Rotary Club.  Following the magnitude 7.2 earthquake in Bohol Philippines in October, 2013, the island nation was devastated less than a month later by Typhoon Yolanda, the deadliest Philippine typhoon on record.  As a member of the Asheville Rotary Club, Biddle has made several trips to the Philippines to deliver food, wheelchairs and other needed supplies.  Sylva Rotarian, Peggy Wike, has participated on two of those trips.  She joined Riddle during his presentation in Sylva and shared how Rotary Clubs in the US have helped the Philippine people as they recover from these natural disasters.

Students of the Month from Southwestern Community College were recognized. Megan Meisner (bottom photo, left) is a Paralegal Technologies student. Laura Holden (bottom photo, right) is an Accounting student.

Megan Meisner will be graduating this semester, with a cumulative grade point average of a 4.0 from the Paralegal Technology Program at SCC. She is also a member of the Society of Leadership and Success (Sigma Alpha Pi) and the Paralegal Technology Club. Megan is interning at the District Attorney’s Office as a Victim/Witness Assistant, serving both Swain and Graham counties. She is excited to utilize her new and developed skill sets in the work field, as well as Western Carolina University, where she will be majoring in Criminal Justice.

Laura Holden was born and raised in Swain County. She graduated from Swain County High School in 1990 and started SCC in the Fall of 1990. She was unable to complete my degree at that time and moved out of state. She is an 8-year cancer survivor. She has 3 sons who are 21, 15, and 5. Laura returned to SCC in Spring of 2010 as a displaced worker due to the decline in the economy to finish what she had started in 1990. Laura achieved her Associates in Business Administration in December 2012 and now is working on her Associates in Accounting. Upon completion of my Associates in Accounting, she will be attending WCU to obtain her Bachelors in Accounting. She is the Payroll/HBR Coordinator for Swain County Schools. She is the President of the Alpha Beta Gamma,and a member of the Phi Theta Kappa at SCC. Laura has been nominated for the National Technical Honor Society at SCC.
