2014-02-06: Kenia Alvarez – Panama School Project

February 6th, 2014 by Scott Baker

Kenia Alvarez 020614 (2)

Kenia Alvarez, (left in picture) an elementary school teacher from Panama, was the featured speaker at a recent lunchtime meeting of the Sylva Rotary Club.  Alvarez teaches 23 children in a one-room schoolhouse in a very rural part of Panama.  She travels three and a half hours by bus once a week to arrive in the vicinity of the school.  She than walks another one and a half hours to reach the school itself, which until recently had no running water, nor electricity.  Alvarez resides in the school by herself during the week, traveling home to be with her family on the weekends.  At the request of Rotarians in Boquete, Panama, members of the Sylva Rotary club – led by Charles Wolfe and Sandy Frazier – have made annual pilgrimages to Alvarez’s school for almost 10 years.  Largely through their personal labor and contributions, the school has been renovated with structural improvements, solar panels, electricity, internet service, computers, and teaching materials, as well as new bathrooms with running water.  Pictured with Alvarez is Sylva Rotary Club President, Kenny Nicholson.
