2013-11-07: Timm Muth – Jackson County Green Energy Park

November 7th, 2013 by Scott Baker

Timm Muth, Director of the Jackson County Green Energy Park, was the featured speaker at a recent lunchtime meeting of the Sylva Rotary Club.  The Green Energy Park is located in Dillsboro beside the former county landfill.  Methane gas created by decomposing waste in the landfill is captured  and used to power and heat artist studios, an art gallery, greenhouses, a pottery kiln, a blacksmith forge, a glassblowing studio and office space .  “What was once an environmental liability has been turned into a valuable economic asset for Jackson County,” Muth said.  Approximately 40 cubic feet of methane gas is captured per minute from the old landfill, and this source of free, clean energy is expected to last up to 20 years.  Tours of the Green Energy Park are free and open to the public.  Pictured are Muth (on right) and Sylva Rotary President, Kenny Nicholson.  For more information go to New members, Deborah Greene (bottom photo, far left) and Matt Kirby (bottom photo, far right) were inducted into the club on Thursday, November 7th.  Also pictured (bottom photo) are sponsors Margo Gray and Ron Rhodes.
