2013-04-04: Callee Boulware – Reach Out and Read

April 4th, 2013 by Scott Baker

The program was Callee Boulware (top photo, left), Regional Director of the Reach Out and Read program shared information about her organization at a recent meeting of the Sylva Rotary Club.  Reach Out and Read is a national program that helps prepare children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together.  Currently, it is estimated that less than half (48%) of American parents read to their children on a daily basis.  Because of the critical development the human brain undergoes between birth and five years of age, being read to early in life is an essential ingredient to academic success later in life, Boulware said.  Reach out and Read reaches over 4 million children in the US.  In NC, it works with over 700 doctors and serves 104,000 children. With Boulware is Sylva Rotary Club president, Lyn Lazar.

Western Carolina University’s School of Stage and Screen will present the musical comedy, “The Drowsy Chaperone” April 11-14 at WCU’s Fine and Performing Arts Center.  Members of the Sylva Rotary Club were treated with two lively songs from the play at a recent lunchtime meeting.  Presenting were WCU student actors (bottom photo, from left), Paul Thieman, Madeline Seagle, Joshua Jones, Christy Haskins, and Jonathan Corbrda.
